My philosophy of teaching stems from the belief that students are important, that they deserve respect, and that teaching involves teaching values such as civility and respect for diversity. Through education an individual will receive the vital skills and tools that are necessary to build a life that is successful and prosperous. Within an educational setting students should be continuously encouraged to solve problems similar to those they will encounter outside of school. This instills in them the ability to become flexible problem solvers in preparation for their adult lives. Educators are a model of ethical behavior, therefore it is our duty to ensure that learning takes place in a safe, open, and supportive environment, so that students learn the important aspects of developing and fostering positive relationships with others.

Educators should be involved in their teaching, in the choices they make when selecting a reading, in the words they choose to describe an item, in the effort they expend, and the excitement projected for some things and not others. I prepare my students for the demands of assuming responsibilities for real-life decisions. Teachers shouldn’t be afraid to assume responsibility for the attitudes they undoubtedly project in the classroom. It is their responsibility to try to be fair in accepting opposition, and challenge students to take ownership of their learning.

The best teaching style can best be described as one that incorporates a diversity of teaching techniques. Teachers must employ the use of hands-on and minds-on learning because supplementing the curriculum with a variety of activities is essential to the learning process. Students must be enthusiastically engaged during lessons, and strategies must be designed to meet each learning style. This will allow students to achieve academic success and acquire a passion for learning. Learning occurs best when a student is fully engaged in the process. They need to be able to make a personal connection with the material taught and apply this knowledge to a variety of experiences.

Educators are most effective at transforming students’ possibilities when they come to know their individual points of view, listen closely to their aspirations, and expand their concepts of their own possibilities.  Then they must focus all of their effort on helping students achieve their goals. Teachers help students move to higher levels of achievement primarily through honesty and a commitment to excellence, as well as with the necessary critical thinking skills and constructive feedback.  It is important to inspire them to take possession of their own lives by intensively preparing them for a lifelong journey of self-development.  Students must be taught that success is crafted from incremental accomplishments that ultimately transform their own lives and impact the lives of others.  They must know that success is an internal state of mind that is not externally granted.  Educators need to instill a passion for learning within students, while providing them with the tools necessary to foster their individual talents. The goal is to have students look back on their time in the classroom and remember their teacher as someone who genuinely cared for their well-being, and challenged them to achieve their dreams.
